VFX Breakdown "Deadpool"

In the lecture session, we had to discuss about the VFX movie breakdown of how the film was created and what was the purpose of it being showed. The main purpose was to tell the audience of what's real and what's CGI in the movies. I picked for my group the dead pool movie breakdown. As from watching the video clip is that at the being they composited the area and then throughout of the whole video was CG and 3D modeled, especially with the small tiny glass being broken from the car was 3D modeled. Also with the character (Deadpool) was 3D modeled, CGI and mocap. The characters face wasn't putted any makeup but was CGI as well.

Characters Breakdown (VFX) "Deadpool"

This is another breakdown insight of how Deadpool was developed, the characters was created for the scene. Which my opinion this is incredible of how they only created the characters in 3D then CGI to make the scene more realistic to fit in the real world, however in the film. They also used the mocap outfit to tanslate the movements into the 3D Models and a lot of FX simulations to capture the elements for the characters.

Philosophical Toys and Digital Visual Effects

In this article it is discussing about how art and science are being connected and being used for film making productions. In the article it says that throughout the years of film our era of movies are similar to the movies that was first invented and that in our era of time movies are being made for entertainment instead of a story. He also talks about how digital images expended the realism of films "Digital imaging also has enlarged a domain for realism in cinema based on indexical and perceptual factors" (Stephen Prince). In the article it also compares visual effects to science technology where Stephen Prince talks about how digital software programs started to work with scientists to create a more realistic imagery for scenes in movies. It also talks about how in the past cinema technology of art and science gave a gate way path to the new imagery technology tools of film making for films. Also Stephan talks about simulations within science experiments of gas, liquids, and solids for the digital visual effects which will be impactful for film productions and further future movie productions. He also mentions about lighting, movement and sound being relevant within the art for visual effects. "Where fantastic worlds are built with a physically accurate rendition of the behavior of solids, liquids, gases, light, movement, and sound". Also in the article mentioned about filmmakers expending their visual effects by collaborating with scientists to develop software programs which allowed them to create environments and objects to utilize them into a scene, Which can help them to develop rendered scenes. and using physics to develop light, fluid and particle dynamics for any post productions.

WHAT IS DIGITAL CINEMA?

Manovich, L. (2001) 'Digital Cinema' ,The Language of New Media. Cambridge MA: MIT press.

Screenshot 2020-10-19 171132.jpg

In this article it is discussing about the main history of change within the digital films. In this article he talks about how the audience are understanding of what they are watching in the cinema which is giving them a story to believe that they are part of it "Digital media is understood as something which will let cinema tell its stories in a new way” (Lev Manovich). In 1996 in the spring "Hollywood" participated as actors for films to become a human character default option for digital virtual three dimensional space, that can be used for flat images which can be projected on a screen. In that year "1996" was the only way for them to create moving images for computers and to develop films in that time of era. In the article he talks about that they had a crisis of telling a story for films in any genre. The French film theorist "Christian Metz" wrote about "Most films shot today, good or bad, original or not, 'commercial' or not, have as a common characteristic that they tell a story; in this measure they all belong to one and the same genre, which is, rather, a sort of 'super-genre' 'sur-genre' ". For this he talks about that there's never a negative or positive way of telling a story within film. He compares every narrative for all genres with film or commercial and the mistakes that was taken place in fictional films from the twentieth century cinema that was being done as a live action film which didn't look as great as live events for photographic recordings of real events. However now in this time of era anything can be possible for computer simulation, digital composting and photorealistic environment scenes.

Comparing the Articles of Lev Manovich to Stephan Prince

For both of the articles, talks about the comparison of digital film being development for film making productions and being the first invented films that was utilized for digital cinema and for the future era of digital films. Stephen Prince was talking about more of the positive side of finding ways to develop realistic developments for any genre of post production movies however Lev Manovich was more of the negative side of digital film. by explaining the issues of commercial or non commercial, films or any development that was being created for movies.

Essay Proposal
How Photorealism Changed The VFX Industry

For my proposal I picked this title because I noticed the difference of how photorealism advanced the VFX industry and, the changes and improvements within the VFX of photorealism in games and movies. I will also talk about the techniques and technology that games or movie artist's used to develop their scenes with photo scans, gaming engines and high quality equipment into to post production and why it is used for to create photo realistic scenes, because the main focus of this investigation is about how photorealism changed the industry within the categories of the game and the film industry.

I will also research how Tron Legacy  was created because I noticed in the film they had the original actor be taken place of being the main character however they had a twist because in the movie the story behind it is has the main character making himself again into this world he created and have a reflection of him, so the reflection was him but made in a different virtual world which was made in CGI of his young self. For The Lion King the methods of the artist developing the movie was made in CGI as well however the environment set of the weather was taken in a real world but the environments of every scene was made with a extremely high game engine which I will mention in the investigative essay. They also filmed the scene with a virtual camera that allows the creative artists to create any 3D environment scene reflecting to the real world.

For GTA V I will be covering how they used CGI for creating the characters but the entire game environment was developed by using a high game engine software and hardware. For this I did my research from this article from Adrian Courreges (Article Website) which explains and talks about how they used these technologies to develop the entire game and that they used real time rendering for it. For the other ones that I planned and mentioned in my mini map of the other comparison of released games and movies, I will be talking about they're use of methods of developing the scenes for one example of the Game of Thrones (TV Series) with the character of the queen of dragons and how it was set and what technologies they used to create it and how it links to photorealism.

What is Photorealism?

Photorealism is a image that is real in the real world, Photorealism can be created or developed in different ways from games or films. In order to create it, it can be done by compositing, matt painting or full on CGI.

A CGI scene is made by creating 3d models and 3d environments. In order for this to happen you need to use a 3d software which allows you to create 3d scenes. Also in the 3d software it will allow you to render which gives you an insight of rendering any scenes to look real or not. This depends on applying textures on your 3d models, which make's it look realistic.

Compositing is helpful when it comes to creating a CG film and making it look real, however it depends on which elements you use for it, such CG assets or real images. this can be done from using compositing software's such as nuke or after effects, these two powerful software's allows you to composite any image or footage together to create a realistic scene. However you will also need to match them together by mathching the colour, brightness, contrast, and temperature depending on the day of the foot it is taken for such as day, noon or night.

What is VFX Compositing?

VFX Compositing is when a artist is connecting or combing different elements from CG assets or image's together to create a final comp shot. In order to create it, someone will need to create a 3d asset and render it with real textures and composite it into a footage or an image, another way is when someone creates a CG image by matte painting it or just pure image manipulation with real image's which then a compositor will need to combine it together with other images to make a VFX shot. Compositing only happens when you have different elements such as greenscreen, matte paint, images and 3d resources combined together to create a realistic shot. People only composite if the environment is hard to capture many elements together in a camera.

Reality Capture

A reality capture is when you place an image into the computer to capture realism into it, this will be projected as a 2D form. Photo scanning non as photogrammetry which is another method however it is used to create 3D objects that can be used or projected onto the computer screen.

For this to be done, is through a 3d software that can import ,multiple images at once which then will be placed around the object to create a realistic asset or character in the viewport that then can be exported for any 3d software's to build 3d or CG scenes for post production projects and that will be casted for movies ot games.

Essay Introduction

Throughout the decades photorealism was born to change the Visual Effects industry. From this, photorealism was made by the first inventor of print Louis K. Meisel in the 1970, which was created in the United States, that gave a path way of realism through drawings, paintings and any graphical materials within photography and film making. Which then allow artists to develop any imagery through those main categories for visual effects and game design. However during the time in 1960's photorealism was founded by Richard Estes, Chuck Close and Ralph Goings which they were the movement of the first reproduction of photographic imagery in paintings (Steele, G. 2012).

Also there is another method of production of photorealism, within sculptural work that was created by Duane Hanson and John De Andrea which had a similar attempt within photorealism instead of photo's being casted in live models. From this, overall technique of production photorealistic imagery through the 1960's and 1970's it began to evolve the visual effects, photography, film making and game design industries to produce real images and have extremely better results through the new technology of producing photorealistic imagery in any production taking place (Steele, G. 2012).

Photorealistic imagery started to expand the game industry within the methods of computer graphic hardware. From this computer graphic expanded by having a stronger hardware to produce high quality of photo realism imagery in game production (Lal, K, A. 2019). In 1980 wireframe models began for games or any designer software's which is the biggest strategy to created normal or complex models for live production (Wikipedia 2021).

In my essay I will be discussing about photorealism and CGI and how these two aspects are evolving in photo realistic games, virtual games, movies and television shows. I will also talk about virtual cameras being used in movies or games. I will also talk about the history of how photorealism changed in the decades and the use of it in the present and I will talk how games and movies were developed in CGI.
